| Park celebrates United's only goal |
Despite being the better team for much of the game, United exited the FA Cup far too early, and Liverpool march on to the Fifth Round draw.
From United's last game - a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium - Sir Alex Ferguson made four changes - three of them down to injury. Phil Jones, Nani and Wayne Rooney all missed the trip to Anfield with knocks picked up from the previous game and they were replaced by Rafael, Park and Scholes. Meanwhile, de Gea starts in goal for the first time in 2012, and he was absolutely spectacular in United's 1-1 Premier League draw against Liverpool back in October. It should have never been up for debate, but Evra not only starts, but will lead out Manchester United, as he goes back to the place where he was racially abused by Luis Suarez, who is still serving an eight-match suspension for that.
Recap
Like every other game between these two clubs, the game had chances for both teams in the opening 10 minutes.
In the fourth minute, the first chance of the match fell to the home side, but de Gea stood made a very good save to parry Rodriguez's dipping shot out of harm's way for a corner kick. Four minutes later, United had a chance of their own, but Giggs' shot from the edge of the area was drilled straight into the chest of Pepe Reina.
In the 17th minute, Liverpool cleared a free-kick from a dangerous position but, with them pushing out, Valencia drove at them and struck an absolutely thunderous effort that thudded against Reina's right post.
Like what normally happens in football when you don't take your chance, Liverpool took the lead at the other end. Jose Enrique decided to try test his luck from distance but Smalling head the ball clear and, from the resulting corner, Agger rose highest and headed the ball into the back of the net.
Despite going down a goal, United were completely bossing the game - and that finally turned into a goal five minutes before halftime. Rafael, who was defending so well, got involved the attack down the right and his cut-back cross was smashed inside the near post by Park - who non-existent for much of the game until then.

After the second correct non-call, United had a golden chance to pounce on a mistake by Reina but, unfortunately, Welbeck's touch was a little too heavy and Liverpool were able to clear the danger.
In a minute span, the teams traded long-range efforts, but neither found the back of the net. First, Rafael blocked off Downing for no reason and Gerrard's free-kick was well saved by a flying save by de Gea to his right. Then, at the other end, Carrick had space to get off a shot, but his left-footed effort went just wide of Reina's left post.
In the 87th minute, completely against the run play, Liverpool retook the lead. A long clearnace by Reina was flicked on by Carroll and Kuyt beat Evra and slotted the ball passed de Gea.
Two minutes later, Liverpool could have sealed the game, but Carroll's header struck the crossbar and and Kuyt's follow up went inches wide of the post.
Three minutes were added on, but Manchester United could not get the ball forward and they exited the FA Cup prematurely.

Has there been a finding of racial abuse? I'm not too sure but I think not.
If there hasn't I'd be cautious of making such claims, whatever your personal views, as a worldwide publication of a defamatory statement can be expensive.
I'm a lawyer reading this in Australia.
Regards.
Although Man U. had the greater time of possession, they were not the better team. It was an evenly fought match with the late goal by Kuyt the difference...
It's the FA Cup and while it is always good to beat Pool, it's the league that matters. Scholes was fantastic and Valencia had another GREAT game. United have shown that even with an injury list that would have been a crisis at other clubs, as in the case of Arsenal, they are still competitive.
Ferguson hang your head in total fuckin shame. Welbeck up front on his own,he is average at best.Berbe comes on with 1 min to go.the highest scorer against Liverpool.Because he would not agree to leave in Jan so Ferguson can get his 10% on the sale. There is nobody bigger than the club. How bad is Gerrard when Scholes ran the show.
Liverpool are at least 18 points back in the league--where they should be :)
Read the report. There has.
I heard 3 United fans were arrested for spitting on the Hillsborough memorial, any truth to this?
Sad and ungry United fan here... Hoe cud we say we bossed the game when u have to hold your hands up and say Liverpool desreved it cos they showed more heart and passion..... Ok the first time in ages they had'nt dominated us but we were freasher not having playd mid week so no excuses Sir Alex wrong wrong stiker selection... no cutting edge..we have to take it on the chin no matter how much it hurts and move on and this really hurts!
Joe
class allways shows, you cant deny it,there not great yet.....but there gonna be........as for manu........ginger nut and taff.....(there is absolutely no racial disrespect meant by these words, even there mates call them that)were your best players...an thats got to be a worry....made up
United need some new blood, De Gea is not a top goalie yet; Wellbeck is good against lesser teams; Sir Alex needs to retire as he now has to deal with parity in the league instead of always winning as a big fish in a small pond. Give Rooney more rest, at least 30 games a year since he is a wimp. They need a goal keeper; another defender; a better midfielder and a new manager.
Time for Ferguson to go home
Agree, saf to go home, his decisions suck
Agreed it's time for Fergie to go: Vidic, Ferdinand, Rooney & Nani would have carried us through comfortably. What was he thinking of letting them get injured?
Very good performance by vastly under-strength side, just a shame they switched off at the end. But if you'd told me United won't win the Cup but they'll put out the soulless mercenaries; I'd have taken that.
BTW: anonymous Aussie Lawyer: just for laughs -for what reasong do you think Saurez is serving his ban - having a bad hair-cut?
United badly missed Nani. One of the few players who can get past defenders.

The mighty Ferguson, happy season without a single trophy and a squad full of patients
